It is a prerequisite to using any of these strategies. All crypto protocols (or dApps) require you to connect your wallet to interact with them. Holding crypto assets in a Coinbase account is not sufficient to deposit to Aave/Yearn/etc because Coinbase controls your tokens in that case. You need to control your own tokens by moving them to a wallet you control (like Metamask) before you can deposit them in any other protocol.
